Examinations

A marker of progress

For many piano students, learning to play is a deeply personal and rewarding journey. Some enjoy playing purely for the joy of music, while others find motivation in setting goals and tracking progress more formally. For those who are interested, ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) examinations offer an excellent framework to support structured development and celebrate milestones along the way.

A Structured Option for Measured Progress

ABRSM exams are entirely optional, but for students who enjoy working towards clear goals, they can be a helpful way to measure growth. The graded system—from beginner levels through to advanced—provides a well-established pathway that supports both technical skill and musical understanding, including performance, sight-reading, and aural awareness.

Many students find satisfaction in the sense of accomplishment that comes with preparing for and completing an exam. It can provide a tangible sense of progress and help guide focus during practice sessions.

Practice is Key

Whether a student chooses to take exams or not, one thing remains true: real progress depends on the time and effort dedicated to practice outside of lessons. Weekly lessons offer guidance and feedback, but consistent playing at home is where skills are truly developed.

For students who opt to pursue ABRSM exams, the structured syllabus can give shape to their practice. However, the value of the exam lies in the journey—not just the certificate. The experience of preparing for a performance, tackling technical challenges, and reflecting on feedback all contribute to musical growth.

Theory and Practical Exams

ABRSM examination success

If you are considering ABRSM exams as part of your musical journey, I am here to help you prepare thoughtfully and confidently.  This includes learning theory content in each lesson.

The theory of music is often "glossed over" in many lessons offered and this can become an issue as Grade 5 theory is a prerequesite for taking Grade 6 practical examinations.

Separate theory lessons are available for those who may need to pass the grade 5 in order to progress.
